Season
5 Episode 23 The Melody Lingers On
[Spencer’s house]
Spencer: You see, if my head hadn't have
been so jet-laggy, I would have remembered it sooner. The number off of the
Varjack receipt is the same number as the personal ads in Ali's house.
Emily: How does this help Hanna?
Spencer: Well, if Ali's not guilty, then
they can't charge Hanna as an accessory. You can't help someone commit a crime
that they didn't commit.
Aria: But Ali already told us that the
letter and the passport are fake. Why do we think the number and the ads are
real?
Spencer: I don't know. But we didn't
find the number with the other things.
Juliet: So what if the numbers are the same
What does that mean? You know, we call it and it just rings, no pick up, no
voice mail, nothing.
Aria: Yeah, and meanwhile Neilan's Law
Office is closed and locked.
Spencer: But the number appearing twice
It's got to mean something, we just have to figure it out.
Emily: What if we don't figure it out in
time?
Veronica: The four of you are gonna be late for school.
Spencer: Uh, no, Mom, teacher's
conference. They dropped the first two periods. I told you.
Veronica: Oh, then, uh, this is my
chance to talk to all of you. I want to strongly suggest that you girls stay
away from Alison's trial.
Spencer: This is a suggestion?
Veronica: For Emily, Juliet and Aria,
yes, for you it's more than a suggestion.
Emily: What is Ali gonna think if we're
not there?
Veronica: I'm more concerned about what
other people will think. Juries have eyes.
Juliet: The whole town knows that we're
friends with her.
Aria: Yeah, if we don't go, it'll be
like saying we think she's guilty.
Veronica: I can't tell you, Juliet and Emily
what to do, but consider your actions.
Spencer: Okay, so what are we gonna do
when Hanna goes to trial? Are we just supposed to turn our backs on her too?
Veronica: We're not talking about
ethics.
Spencer: That's for sure.
Emily: Maybe we should go.
Aria: Yeah.
Juliet: okay
[Brew]
Caleb: Everything I've tried to trace
this number back to a source just disappears into a black hole of nothingness. No
tagged ID, no localizing signature, the phone on the other end could be on Mars
or on the other side of this room.
Juliet: An insanely secure phone and
somebody uses it to order pizza?
Emily: Maybe they don't know what they
have.
Aria: Then why don't they pick up when
we call?
Spencer: Do you have a burner phone?
Caleb: What color?
Emily: It's just gonna keep ringing.
Spencer: Well, let's see what happens
when I put it in writing.
Emily: Holly Golightly or Holly Varjack?
Caleb: Send it.
Aria: What if we're not on the same book
club?
Juliet: Then we'll figure out something
else?
Emily: Ali's running out of time.
Caleb: And so is Hanna.
Spencer: I know.
Aria: Spence, are you gonna be there
tomorrow at the trial?
Spencer: I don't know. Listen, you guys,
I have to go do something.
So I'll talk to you all later.
Emily: Sure. Are you gonna be visiting
Hanna today?
Caleb: Tomorrow, but she said she'll try
to call me today.
Juliet: She has to get to Ali and ask about
the phone number.
[Courtroom]
Lawyer: Remember high school? Remember
when every hallway slight was like an assault? When allegiances and enemies
were magnified out of all proportion? It is a world where a perceived opponent
must be dealt with quickly, without remorse. And that is what Alison
DiLaurentis did to Mona Vanderwaal. Miss Marcus will be up here shortly and she
is going to tell you an amazing story about Alison DiLaurentis. How she was
kidnapped and traumatized by two years of captivity. How she escaped her
captors and returned home, helped by her closest friends. It is a remarkable
story. It's breathtaking. None of it happened. It's a fairy tale. The
commonwealth will prove, with direct testimony of witnesses, that Alison
DiLaurentis' epic tale of abduction and escape is a lie. It is a lie created by
her and perpetuated by the friends that helped to "save" her. Mona
Vanderwaal knew the truth. She had the power to destroy the fantasy created by
Alison and maintained with her little group of followers. And that is why
Alison DiLaurentis planned and carried out the murder of Mona Vanderwaal,
consigning her to a cruel, anonymous end.
[Outside court]
Girls on the phone to Spencer
Aria: They know about Ali not being
kidnapped. They probably know about New York too.
Spencer: How could they know?
Aria: Witnesses. Spencer, he said
they've got witnesses.
Spencer: Cyrus.
Aria: Cyrus?
Juliet: Cyrus?
Emily: What about Cyrus?
Spencer: The cops must have found Cyrus.
He knows the whole kidnapping story and he'd do anything to save himself. Aria,
where's Mike?
Aria: He's in Harrisburg.
Spencer: Good.
Aria: Good? What do you mean good? Why
is that good?
Alison’s dad: You knew about this. You
all knew and you told the police.
Alison’s lawyer: This isn't going to
solve the problem, Mr. DiLaurentis.
Alison’s dad: You talked her into it,
that's what happened. The five of you talked her into this. It was your idea.
Jason: Dad, Ali lied to them the same as
she lied to us.
Alison’s dad: Jason, you don't know
Alison’s lawyer: Not here, gentlemen.
Aria: You heard all that?
Spencer: Yeah, I heard.
Aria: They adjourned for the day but
we'll call if anything else happens.
Spencer: Okay.
[Brew]
Juliet: Well, is the phone number a dead
end or not?
Spencer: What if it's Mona's and it's a
dead end?
Emily: Mona is dead, so who is the
lawyer talking to? I mean, he had to be getting his instructions from someone.
Spencer: You okay?
Caleb: Yeah.
Emily: Aria.
Aria: It's the number. Look, it's the
Varjack number.
Spencer: Answer it.
Aria: Why does it have my number? I
never called from my phone.
Juliet: Answer it quick.
Aria: They don't know we're here.
Caleb: We don't have time for this.
Hello?
Spencer: Who is it?
[Caleb’s house]
Caleb: Are you getting this?
Hanna: I'm getting it.
Juliet: We don't know what it means.
Hanna: I know what it means. I mean, I
don't know but I've heard it before.
Aria: Where?
Hanna: In Mona's room. She used to play
this song, French music from people like Edith Pilaf.
Aria: Like the rice dish?
Spencer: Piaf, Edith Piaf.
Caleb: Ali was wrong. It was never Mona
taunting her, it was "A"
Emily: Then why call back and play that
song? Why not let us keep thinking it was Mona.
Caleb: To rub it in our faces.
Juliet: Well, Mona never sent that lawyer,
but that doesn't mean she left us in the dark.
Emily: She hid the tape Hanna found in
that book. The police went all over that room and they never found it.
Hanna: So?
Spencer: So maybe there's more. Maybe
the answer is just still in that room.
Emily: We have to get back to Mona's
room.
Spencer: Hanna, you spent more time in
that room than any of us, so try to think about places that Mona would have hid
stuff.
Hanna: Okay.
Aria: We need to talk to Mona's mom.
Emily: But she wasn't at the trial.
Juliet: It's got to be hard to hear people
talk about your dead daughter.
Hanna: Guys, if there's something in
that room that can get me out of here, I don't care how upset she is, just find
it.
Caleb: We'll do it.
Hanna: That's me. They're gonna cut me
off.
Spencer: Hang on.
Juliet: we’re here.
Aria: Hanna, stay strong.
Emily: We love you.
Caleb: Here. Sorry for grabbing it from
you.
Aria: It's okay.
Caleb: No, it's not. If we start
stepping on each other, none of us are gonna make it out alive.
Emily: Should we go see Mona's mom?
Spencer: Not all at once. That's just
gonna scare her.
Aria: I'll go do it. Well, I'm the least
intimidating.
Juliet: yeah she’s small
Emily: I'll drive you.
Caleb: Spence.
Spencer: I'll call you guys later.
Juliet: Okay.
[Emily’s car]
Aria: No answer.
Emily: Do you really think there's
something up there?
Juliet: or are we just chasing smoke?
Aria: I don't know. But whatever Mona
was, she wasn't stupid. So if she knew what might happen, she could have left
us a clue.
Emily: If, might, could.
Aria: That's all we've got.
Emily: Well, what if it's not enough?
We're running out of time, we're all gonna get dragged down the rabbit hole
with Ali.
Juliet: Do you want to just give up and go
shopping?
Emily: Not just yet.
[Courtroom]
Lawyer: Is this the video the police
showed you?
Jason: Yes.
Lawyer: After you saw it, did you tell
the police of your sister Alison's whereabouts on the day that Mona Vanderwaal
was attacked?
Jason: I said that she wasn't with us.
Lawyer: Why have you decided to tell the
truth about Alison's alibi?
Jason: I don't know.
Lawyer: Was it because of something you
saw on the video?
Jason: I don't think so.
Spencer whispers: Something's wrong. He's
changing his story.
Lawyer: Didn't you tell Detective Tanner
that you thought the attacker in the video was Alison?
Jason: I might have said that, yes, but
I don't believe that now.
Lawyer: You told police
Jason: I've been thinking and I'm sure
that couldn't have been Alison.
Lawyer: Mr. DiLaurentis do you know a
girl named Hanna Marin?
Lawyer: Objection. Irrelevant.
Robson: Where are we going, Mr. Sirk?
Lawyer: Your Honor, the witness has
confirmed that the defendant doesn't have an alibi. That's fact. I would like
the jury to understand what may have influenced his identification of the
attacker.
Robson: Counselor?
Lawyer: Your Honor, if Mr.Sirk wants to
cross-examine his own witness, I have no objection.
Robson: Proceed.
Lawyer: Do you know Hanna Marin?
Jason: Yes.
Lawyer: Is she a friend of your sister
Alison?
Jason: Yes.
Lawyer: Who is Ashley Marin?
Jason: Hanna's mother.
Lawyer: Objection. Irrelevant.
Lawyer: Goes to foundation.
Robson: Overruled. But don't take the
scenic route, Mr. Sirk.
Lawyer: Is Mrs. Marin in the courtroom
today?
Jason: Yes.
Lawyer: Point her out to the jury,
please.
Jason: She's in the third row. She's
wearing a blue dress.
Lawyer: Does Mrs. Marin work for you?
Jason: She did, she doesn't anymore.
Lawyer: Did you have occasion to meet
with her outside of the office?
Jason: Yes.
Juliet whispers: what
Lawyer: Socially?
Jason: Yes.
Lawyer: How many times have you been
with her socially?
Jason: That's I didn't count.
Lawyer: These social meetings, were they
always in public places?
Jason: Most of them.
Lawyer: But not all of them. Some were
in private.
Jason: Yes.
Aria whisper: Is he saying what I think
he's saying?
Emily whispers: Seriously?
Lawyer: How would you characterize these
private meetings?
Jason: Sorry, I don't think I understand
the question.
Lawyer: Well, would you describe them as
intimate?
Jason: They were private.
Lawyer: Did anything happen during these
private meetings with the attractive woman seated in the gallery that led you
to alter your testimony?
Jason: No.
Lawyer: Did Ashley Marin, the mother of
someone accused as an accomplice to this crime, offer any personal inducement
to you to change your testimony to favor the defense?
Juliet whispers: that’s what he done that
was so terrible
Juliet tears up
Aria whispers: hi
Juliet whispers: I’m fine
Lawyer: Objection. Asked and answered.
Robson: Sustained. Move on, Mr. Sirk.
Lawyer: Last chance, Mr. DiLaurentis. Do
you want to clear this up, or leave it to the jury's imagination?
Lawyer: Objection. Improper,
inflammatory, irrelevant.
Robson: Sustained. Do you have any other
questions for this witness?
Lawyer: yes one more – who is Juliet James?
Jason: My ex
Lawyer: and that ex is Alison’s friend
right?
Jason: yes
Lawyer: her friends are everything to her
am I right?
Jason: yeah
Lawyer: so you have feelings for her?
Jason looks at Juliet
Jason: I don’t think those feelings will
ever go away
Lawyer: Nothing further.
[Outside court]
Emily: Do you think Hanna knew about
this?
Aria: She did. And it looks like
"A" knew about it, too.
Emily: Well, what happened in there hurt
Ali, didn't it?
Spencer: Yeah. It made it sound like her
own brother thinks she did it.
Aria: Until Hanna's mom convinced him to
change his story.
Emily: where’s Juliet?
Aria: I don’t know she’s pretty heart
broken right now
Emily: Do you think that's what she did?
Hanna's mom?
Spencer: Hold on. Jason? Are you all
right?
Jason: Ask me after I find a place to
sleep tonight.
Spencer: You and Hanna's mom
Emily: It's none of your business, Spencer. It's
nobody's business.
Spencer: No, you're right. It's not. But when one of my best friend is torn up about this -
If you really need a place to stay
Jason: It's okay. I'll figure
something out. Cross
your fingers and wish hard that you never have to sit in that chair. You won't like
it.
Aria: What did he say?
Spencer: The truth will set you free but
first it turns you inside out. Come on.
Aria: Where?
Spencer: Mona's house.
[Staircase at the court]
Juliet is sitting down on the staircase teary
and Jason see’s her and sits next to her
Jason: I’m sorry you had to hear it like
that, I just
Juliet: I know, I heard you whisper through
the glass ball
Jason: you heard
Juliet: I don’t know why I am so upset. We weren’t
together and
Jason: you’re with Paul
Juliet: I am just lying to myself right now
Jason: I’m sorry
Juliet: no it’s fine. I need to go
Juliet gets up and walks one step down, Jason
grabs her arm
Jason: I meant what I said
Juliet: I know
Juliet walks away
[Juliet’s house]
Juliet is on the phone to spencer
Juliet: what you found the note in her
mirror
Spencer: yes
Juliet: ah!
Spencer: will you be okay tonight?
Juliet: yeah I’ll be fine
Spencer: Jason said stuff
Juliet: I know, listening I need to call
Paul right now he’d wanna know what happened today so
Spencer: yeah course, will you say
everything?
Juliet: course not, I don’t want him to
worry even more than he already is
Spencer: true, bye
Juliet: bye
